Calculate Asphalt in Tons

Need to calculate asphalt in tons? Here is a simple step by step process with an example:

Step 1 - Determine the dimensions (Length, Width, and Depth) in feet of all areas requiring asphalt.

ex: 2 inches of asphalt / 12 = .167 feet (2" = 0.167')

Part A:

10 foot wide

50 foot long

Part B:

8 foot wide

20 foot long

Step 2 - Multiply the dimensions together, sum up the parts, and divide by 27 to to convert from cubic feet to cubic yards.

ex: Part A = 10' x 50' x .167' = 83.50 cubic feet

Part B = 8' x 20' x .167' = 26.72 cubic feet

Sum = Part A + Part B = 83.50 + 26.72 = 110.22 cubic feet

Sum / 27 = 110.22 cf / 27 cf/cy = 4.08 cubic yards

Step 3 - Multiply the result of step 2 (cubic yards of asphalt) by 2.083 (general rule of thumb). The result will be in Tons of asphalt.

ex: Cubic Yards * 2.083 tons/cy = 4.08 * 2.083 = 8.50 Tons

Step 4 - Check for supply minimums and always order enough.

ex: 9 Tons

The key takeaway is the conversion, 2.083 tons of asphalt per cubic yard. Verify with you local supplier before ordering.
